Call for contributions for ETFRN News 51: “Forest certification and the conservation of biodiversity”

Forest certification is widely advocated as a strategy to conserve the world’s forests and the biodiversity contained in them. More than 15 years have passed since the first forest certificate was issued, and it should now be possible to evaluate if certification has had an impact on biodiversity by looking at the performance of certified forests compared to forests which conduct business as usual.

The European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) plans to issue an ETFRN News about experiences and best practices regarding forest management certification and the conservation of forest biodiversity.

The objective is to contribute to the debate on the effectiveness of forest certification as a tool for biodiversity conservation in tropical forests. More specifically we would like to bring together practical experiences and learn lessons.

A small team of guest editors (Douglas Sheil, Jack Putz, Peter Saile, and Roderick Zagt) are putting together this issue of ETFRN News. This is supported by Tropenbos International, the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and DFID.
The ETFRN News is scheduled for publication in September 2010.

We are inviting colleagues and organizations involved in forest certification and/or biodiversity conservation to prepare short contributions. We believe that this Newsletter is an important initiative and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase ongoing work.  We would welcome your contribution.

As part of our preparations, we are collecting opinions and perspectives about this topic from as many researchers, practitioners and other interested parties as possible. You are kindly invited to complete this survey, even if you are not planning to submit a contribution.
