Acknowledgements

This workshop was organised by ETFRN in close collaboration with FAO, who generously hosted the meeting, and with Ms Jenny Wong, acting as consultant for the UK DFID's Forest Research Programme. The DFID Forest Research Programme took the initiative in this important subject area by commissioning the review document and as main funder for the workshop. The European Commission provided funding for 7 participants from Africa, through the project 6CP/RAF/354/EC: "Sustainable Forest Management Programme in African ACP Countries". The EC INCODEV programme also co-funded the workshop through ETFRN.
