Trees, Agroforestry and Climate Change in Dryland Africa (TACCDA)

Hyytiälä, Finland, 30 June - 4 July 2003

Workshop information

Forest degradation and land rehabilitation especially in the dry tropical regions receive increasing attention. Much information is already available, but it is necessary to compile and analyse it before effective measures can be taken at the local, national or international level. With EU (EC DG-research) support to VITRI, this workshop forms the core of a project that synthetises African dryland research with an emphasis on biophysical and socio-economic analysis of land degradation and impacts of climate change. A pre-workshop e-mail discussion was facilitated by ETFRN in April-May 2003, and together with background information, its results are available from this website.

The Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI) at University of Helsinki has for more than 20 years been involved in research and training related to tropical forests and dryland rehabilitation. Another co-organiser is the European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN), which connects the tropical forest researchers and their institutions in the EU and promotes North-South information exchange for policy and management improvement. The Special Programme for Developing Countries of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO-SPDC) supports researchers in the South and as a co-organiser now also highlights the humid tropics.

The programme is built on keynote presentations with results of the e-mail discussion, as well as on group work tentatively on:

  1. Dryland degradation and its effects;
  2. Facilitation of land-use change;
  3. International policy implications;
  4. Climate change and drylands; and
  5. Synthesis of research, development and research priorities. Humid regions will also be separately discussed.
