Change in Dryland Africa (TACCDA)"
(Hyytiälä, Finland, 30 June - 4 July
2003)
VITRI (Univ. of Helsinki), FORNESSA & IUFRO-SPDC Initiative on
"Rehabilitation of Degraded Lands in Sub-Saharan Africa" and ETFRN
FORNESSA & IUFRO-SPDC synthesis report: "Rehabilitation of Degraded Lands in Sub-Saharan Africa: Lessons Learned from Selected Case Studies" (1.7 Mb). The report can also be downloaded in sections.
The final proceedings of the TACCDA workshop are available on the downloadable documents page.
In view of the overlapping objectives of both the GFIS Africa synthesis initiative on rehabilitation of degraded lands in sub-Saharan Africa, and the workshop on Trees, Agroforestry and Climate Change in Dryland Africa (TACCDA), efforts have been combined for these two initiatives to be conducted together for a greater impact in the sub-region.
VITRI, IUFRO-SPDC and ETFRN Coordinating Unit have pooled resources to organise an e-discussion (17 March - 25 April) and a workshop. The final TACCDA workshop was held at Hyytiälä, Finland, 30 June - 4 July 2003. ETFRN provided the web and e-discussion platform for TACCDA and the GFIS-Africa project of IUFRO-SPDC. See for more information also the letter to participants from Atse Yapi, IUFRO-SPDC Regional Coordinator for Africa & FORNESSA Secretary, in English and French. For more information on the Hyytiälä workshop, see the workshop background information and the programme.
E-discussion organisation
The electronic workshop ran from 17 March - 25 April 2003. The workshop were in fact two workshops going on more or less simultaneously: one on drylands and one on humid and sub-humid zones. Both workshops could be followed through the web on one platform, or through email. It was possible to register for one or both discussions.
Each week, a new theme for discussion was started. Within every one of these themes, there were opportunities to discuss priorities for research, based on gaps and differences of opinion which emerged during the discussion. Each theme or subtheme was opened with an overview email from an invited contributor, highlighting key issues. These 'theme papers' represented personal views and stimulated debate.
Each theme has it's own webpage with an introduction to the theme and links to all relevant papers and case studies.
Humid and sub-humid land ecosystems themes
The IUFRO-SPDC commissioned three background papers for the purpose of the e-discussion. These background papers and other background material can be downloaded from this website.
