New forests project: World Seed Programme
The New Forests Project provides packets of tree seeds, technical information and training materials free
of charge to groups all over the world who are interested in starting reforestation projects with fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing trees. Available for immediate distribution are high quality seeds of Leucaena
leucocephala, Prosopis juliflora, Gliricidia sepium, Cajanus cajan, Acacia nilotica, Cassia siamea,
Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia mearnsii, Acacia tortilis, Albizzia lebbeck, Dalbergia sissoo, Robinia
pseudo-acacia and Gleditsia triacanthos. If you are ordering a reforestation package please provide an
environmental description of your area, including elevation, average annual rainfall, length of rainy and
dry seasons, high and low temperatures, soil characteristics and how you intend to use the trees. For more

ITTO Fellowships
ITTO offers fellowships to promote human resource development and institutional strengthening in the
forestry sectors of member countries. The priority areas are: Forest Industry; Economic Information and
Market Intelligence; and Reforestation and Forest Management. Fellowship funds are provided for the
following activities: (1) visits to forests, mills and research institutions; (2) participation in conferences,
workshops and training courses; (3) postgraduate programmes, not including PhDs; (4) short-term
research; (5) technology transfer to producer member countries; and (6) preparation of technical
documents.
Applications are required to conform with ITTO's general objectives in respect of sustainable forest
management, utilisation and trade and, in particular, the Year 2000 Objective. The average award is
US$6,500 with a maximum of US$12,000. Only nationals of ITTO member countries are eligible for
support. The Fellowship Selection Committee appraises applications at the ITTO Council Sessions in May
and December each year. Fellowship activities may not commence until at least one month after the
relevant Council Session. The next deadline for applications is 20 March 1998.

Position sought
Jean-Guy de Bazelaire is a young engineer who recently graduated from the Ecole Nationale des
Ingénieurs des Techniques Agricoles (ENITA) in Bordeaux. He is presently involved in research on
reducing the costs of reforestation in the Southwest of France. He reads, speaks and writes English, and
reads and writes German. Mr de Bazelaire is interested in forest research and is seeking a position either
in France or abroad in the field of sylviculture or forest management.
