Established
in 1991, the European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) is
a forum for communication between European organisations, researchers,
EU institutions and others concerned with (sub-)tropical forest
research. The ETFRN Network seeks to promote the involvement of
European research expertise towards the conservation and wise use
of forests and woodlands in tropical and subtropical countries.
The
network has participants in 16 European countries, including Norway,
Switzerland, and all European Union member states, except Luxemburg.
There is an ETFRN national focal point in each of these countries.
The names and addresses of the focal points are available under
National Focal Points.
For more background information see the Coordinating
Unit.
ETFRN
provides Network Services which include:
ETFRN contributes
to the wider coordination approach envisaged under the European
Initiative on Agricultural Research for Development (EIARD).
ETFRN
is not a funding organisation. We do provide links
to funding information.
ETFRN: Part
of the worldwide forest research information network
ETFRN
aims to provide a European focal point for information exchange
and debate on tropical forest research activities at international
level. ETFRN maintains links with international organisations such
as the Global
Forum for Agricultural Research, FAO,
IUFRO and CIFOR.
As a regional network, ETFRN is particularly well placed to interact
with other regional networks. Links have been established with APAFRI,
AAS, CORAF-Forêt
and CATIE.
Knowing
‘who’ is doing ‘what’ and ‘where’ will facilitate the coordination
of research and development activities and minimise duplication,
thus ensuring a more efficient use of resources.
Support to
ETFRN
Until April 2004, the ETFRN was funded by the Directorate General Research of the European Commission under the INCO (International Cooperation) programme. Currently the ETFRN CU holds several contracts with the UK DFID Forestry Research Programme, and it has a partnership with the National Forest Programme Facility based at the FAO.
Office
space and general support for the Coordination Unit is provided
by Tropenbos International
in the Netherlands.
National
focal points (national nodes) represent the member institutes during
the meetings of the Steering Committee of the network. They
also distribute the ETFRN News to relevant institutes and researchers
in their country and assist with the compilation of the database
and directory of European institutes.
The
network could not exist without the input provided by researchers
and others concerned with (sub)tropical forests.
