Introduction
FP6 is
the European Community Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development
and Demonstration. The general objective of FP6 is the strengthening of scientific
and technological bases of EC industry and to encourage it to become more competitive
at international level, while promoting the research activities in support of
other EU policies.
FP6
summary and overview by ETFRN
To get a brief introduction into the FP6, ETFRN composed a FP6 summary document
(Word 54kb and PDF
39 kb), which contains the objectives, funding instruments, and a short
overview of all the activities funded under each of the three programs, including
the budget. The bold parts in this document are of specific interest for forest
researchers.
Overview
of forest research funding possibilities
To get an idea on the main funding possibilities for forest researchers within
FP6, ETFRN composed an overview of possibilities for forest research within
FP6 (Word 45kb and PDF
29 kb). These concern the thematic areas Global Change and Ecosystems, Policy
oriented Research, and International Cooperation for Developing Countries, as
well as other funding possibilities like the specific program for involving
Small- and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME), and the co-ordination of national,
regional and European research activities (ERA/NET).
FP6
in brief by EC
A more elaborate introduction into FP6 is provided by the EC through their FP6
in brief (Word 283 kb and PDF
144 kb). This document provides a complete overview of the various activities,
funding schemes, thematic areas, types of projects, etc. in order to get an
idea on which call area will best suit your research topic, and which instrument
will best suit your research strategy.
General
overview of all calls for proposals
Detailed information on all activity areas of the FP6 you can find on CORDIS
http://www.cordis.lu/fp6
(external link). Each of the FP6 activities will be subject to one or more calls
for proposals during the period 2002-2006. To determine which programme is most
relevant for you and to find the documents required, there are three steps to
be followed: consult the legislative documents, the workprogramme and the call
for proposals.
1. Relevant legislative documents
Find out about the legislative decision concerning each of the programs. These decisions set out the key actions for each activity and the R&D priorities assigned to them under FP6. Most relevant for forest researchers are:
- "Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area" (2002-2006)
- "Structuring the European Research Area" (2002-2006)
- Ggeneral legal document of the EC on FP6
2. Work programme
Consult the work programme for the activities identified, which describes in detail the research topics which will be covered by the calls for proposals. All work programmes can be found through the link http://www.cordis.lu/fp6/sp1_wp.htm (Special Program 1: Block I and III) and http://www.cordis.lu/fp6/sp2_wp.htm (Special Program 2: Block II) (external links). The ones relevant for forest research can be downloaded from this site. Use the Institution based decision support chart or the Thematic access to the calls.3. Call for proposals
Consult the call for proposals to find the specific activities to be funded in the first period, and to find out when and where to submit your proposal. All calls can be found on CORDIS http://fp6.cordis.lu/fp6/calls.cfm (external link). The calls for the subjects relevant for forest researcher can be downloaded from this site. Use the Institution based decision support chart or the Thematic access to the calls.
Rules
on participation
The Rules for Participation
(pdf 132 kb) provide in more detail the rules that apply to those organisations
participating in the Sixth Framework programme. They define the general principles
and specific requirements affecting participation in indirect actions. They
also set out rules for the dissemination and use of research results, covering
issues such as the ownership of knowledge, protection of knowledge and the dissemination
and use of knowledge. Some of the new features in these rules on participation
which differ from those of the previous Framework Programme include:
Evaluation
criteria
Each implementation instrument will be subject to specific evaluation criteria,
an overview of these criteria (Word
21 kb, pdf 36 kb) can be
downloaded here.
How
to submit a proposal
After the proposal has been prepared based on a specific call, you can submit
the proposal in 4 ways:
